First Days Stewed Fruit Compote

Gentle, warming, and nourishing - this fruit compote is designed to support digestion in the first days postpartum. Sweet, spiced, and easy to prepare, it’s a comforting bite for new parents when their body needs it most. I recommend new parents eat this with their first meals to help allivaite some worries around the first dreaded postpartum poops! :)

Ingredients

  • 2 apples, peeled and chopped

  • 2 pears, peeled and chopped

  • 2 Medjool dates, pitted and chopped

  • 1 1/2 tsp fresh ginger, minced

  • 1/4 tsp clove

  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp cardamom powder (or 3 pods)

  • 1 lemon

  • 2 Tbsp black strap molasses

  • 2 Tbsp pure maple syrup

  • 1/2 Tbsp ghee

  • Filtered water, enough to cover fruit halfway

Optional: star anise, apricot, cranberries, raisins, goji berries

Method

  1. Combine all fruit, spices, ghee, and molasses in a medium pot—reserve lemon juice and maple syrup for later.

  2. Squeeze half a lemon over the fruit.

  3. Add filtered water until fruit is covered about halfway.

  4. Cover and bring to a gentle simmer.

  5. Reduce heat so the mixture is just barely bubbling; keep covered until fruit is fork-tender, checking periodically to ensure some water remains in the pan.

  6. Remove from heat and stir in maple syrup.

    Servings: 2–3

Notes / Tips

  • Ideal to eat on day 1 or 2 postpartum.

  • Can be prepared ahead and frozen—remember to thaw the day before or bring to the hospital.

  • Reheat gently and slowly.

  • Seasonal berries make a lovely addition.

  • Enjoy plain, or spoon over grounding oats or any breakfast porridge.
